After months of rising COVID-19 cases, the CDC has finally said Tuesday that everybody should wear face masks. The CDC stressed that the science backs wearing masks. If you wear one in public, you will protect both yourself and the people around you.
The CDC is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Why Does the CDC Say I Should Wear a Mask?
Wearing masks is so useful, you can even wear cloth face masks. CNN reports that three CDC officials said even cloth masks “help enough to be worthwhile.” The officials also wrote this in a commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association. These officials are Dr. Robert Redfield, Dr. John Brooks, and Dr. Jay Butler.
Redfield is the CDC Director, while Brooks is the chief medical officer. Meanwhile, Butler is Deputy Director for Infectious Diseases.
Public Resistance Against Wearing Masks
However, the same officials also noted that many people in the US still refuse to wear masks. People do not heed mandatory mask orders in some cities. Probably, they don’t know that there is “ample evidence” that people can go around spreading the virus if they don’t wear masks. These people without masks are kicking up the infection rates.
Many people who refuse to wear masks say it is violating their freedoms.
Another Reason Why People Refuse to Wear Masks
Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci says the public did not know much about masks when the pandemic began. The government may also have sent them the wrong message. Dr. Fauci is the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
In a podcast interview, Dr. Fauci said the government might have let the public believe that they didn’t need masks. They had allowed the message to get muddled.
That was a mistake, Dr. Fauci admits. He says there is “no doubt” that the general public would be safer with masks.
With the CDC finally giving the final word, maybe the US public can now take masks seriously. COVID-19 will not just disappear anytime soon.
