Dr. Anthony Fauci warns that even with the COVID-19 vaccine, the US won’t be back to normal until 2022.
Even though 2020 is nearing its end, the COVID-19 pandemic still won’t go away anytime soon. Dr. Anthony Fauci says he doesn’t see things going back to normal yet. He adds that signs of normalcy would appear only by the end of 2021. In short, we can only relax in 2022.
Back to Normal in 2022?
CNN reports that the US may produce a vaccine by the end of this year. However, Dr. Fauci says that not enough people will receive a dose right away. Instead, most Americans will get doses “until the second or third quarter of 2021.”
Dr. Fauci also noted the surge of COVID-19 cases at the beginning of fall. He adds that things will only get worse as winter comes. Johns Hopkins University data say that 29 states have already set new daily case records since the pandemic struck.
The Fall Surge
According to the data, the number of daily new cases rose by 21% compared to the previous week. Meanwhile, testing only went up by 6.63% during the same period. This number means that increased testing did not cause the rise in cases.
Last Tuesday, the US reported 73,240 new cases and 985 deaths.
While waiting for the vaccine, Americans should protect themselves and others to prevent further deaths. In October, 11 states have recorded their highest one-day record of new deaths since the pandemic hit.
CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said that by the time the US flattens the curve, 500,000 people would have died.
Models also project that the US’ daily death toll would reach 2,000 by January 1. As of October, COVID-19 has infected over 8.8 million people and killed over 227,000 people in the US.
