One of the Fastest Growing Tech Companies in North America

Today we get to know Maropost’s Jacopo Mauri. An accomplished man with many titles—Manager, Director, CMO, VP of marketing—and many responsibilities.

The interview below will tell the story of how Jacopo Mauri came to work with Maropost, a once-simple email-marketing service now a gargantuan cloud-based marketing automation platform that empowers B2C brands and retailers to acquire, engage, and convert their customers.

How did you get started in your industry?

Jacopo Mauri: When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with video games. And, because of it, I fought hard to get myself into a marketing internship at Nintendo. It’s this internship that translated my love for video games into a love for marketing. And, after my internship, I continued studying and made use of the knowledge I had gleaned in order to fill and grow into the different roles that I hold today.

When you were starting, was there ever a time you doubted it would work? How did you overcome these doubts?

Jacopo Mauri: Oh, yes. Absolutely. Despite the excitement that I felt when I first started that life-changing internship at Nintendo, Marketing was an obscure subject to me. I had no idea what to expect, and even after, when I was forced to put my University courses on-hold to take my first marketing-based internship, I had plenty of doubts.

Overcoming those doubts had not been easy. But I came up with a plan: I would experience the Marketing Industry for all that it was. And, whether it ended with me staying or leaving, I would learn from it and further my personal development.

Who is Maropost’s target client/customer?

Jacopo Mauri: Maropost serves marketers that are looking for a comprehensive and intelligent marketing automation solution. Do they need to send a lot of emails? Do they need to customize those emails based on audience behavior? Do they need to engage with their audience through multiple channels (like SMS, social media, mobile push notifications, etc.)? Do they want to be able to leverage multiple devices to connect with their target audience?

If one answers any of these questions with a yes, then Maropost is there to help. We’ve already helped over 10,000 marketers, and we intend to help even more as we go along.

Name a marketing strategy that you use to generate new business.

Jacopo Mauri: Be free with your knowledge, and you’ll build—not only credibility but also—trust. Trust that will increase the chances of your audience engaging with you. And, trust that will allow your customers to buy from you without fear.

What quality do you believe has made you successful?

Jacopo Mauri: If I were to describe it in a single word, I believe it is my openness. I lack the ‘fanciness’ that other well-known businessmen have. I’m the kind of person that’s not afraid to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty while coming up with high-level strategies.

For me, no job is too big or too small. That is how I’ve built my career. By being the one-man band that is open to any task and any responsibilities.

What do you find most satisfying about working in your industry?

Jacopo Mauri: In all honesty? It’s incredibly hard to say. I find much satisfaction in my work. I enjoy major successes like everyone else, and I feel extremely satisfied when people reach out to me to ask questions about my content in hopes of seeing their own vision through.

Describe what a typical day for you is like.

Jacopo Mauri: I always try to make sure that my life is as organized as I can make it. Usually, that means planning my days, my weeks, and even my months (for those particularly busy occasions) in advance. And so, armed with this plan, I aim to start every day reviewing what I need to do, usually while out on a walk. Then, when I come back home, I check my mailbox for any urgent letters and look closely at my marketing dashboard to see what kind of responsibilities might have cropped up.

After this preparation, I often spend a significant amount of my time researching. I study ideas, keywords for content, news from competitors, advertising trends, informational content to improve my abilities, tactical how-to terms, etc. This research phase allows me to execute my work for the day more effectively. Ensuring that I know what is expected of me and know how best to distribute the tasks at hand with the agencies and/or contractors that we’re meeting with.

What advice would you give to your past self?

Jacopo Mauri: I suffered from a bad case of imposter syndrome back in my day. So, if given the chance, I would tell myself the truth: Believe in yourself and you will grow. You will make mistakes, but do not let them interfere with your long-term plan. Instead, learn from them, and continue to take risks. Failing is OK, just continue learning how to be the best person you can be.

There’s this quote from Seth Godin, that I think sums things up quite nicely: “There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.”

Where do you see Maropost in the next couple of years?

Jacopo Mauri: The MarTech industry is on fire right now. And more and more companies are searching for a sophisticated strategy that will allow them to engage with their audience in a way that is both effective and meaningful. I believe that Maropost is the key to achieve that kind of success. And, with more and more people shifting from desktop to portable devices, that Maropost’s multi-cha
