US President Donald Trump talked to the country’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci over the phone on Wednesday following several criticisms from White House officials. Sources say that the chat between the two went fine.

Fauci and Navarro

CNN reported that those who are knowledgeable of the matter mentioned that both Trump and National Institue of Allergy and Infectious Disease director Fauci agreed over the phone that both are on the same team. This came after Peter Navarro, the admin’s trade adviser, published an opinion article that is a direct attack to Fauci, with claims that the health expert, who has a higher public approval than the president, is not to be trusted. Navarro writing for the USA Today said that Fauci “has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on.”

This is just one of the several other criticisms that the well-respected US health expert has received from White House for the past days. It was reported that this White House staff remained the anonymity while attempting to discredit Fauci to news outlets, Business Insider recalled.

De-escalation tactics

However, the president answered in defense of the infectious disease expert by refusing to accept Navarro’s statement as the official stance of the White House. Trump said, “Well, he made a statement representing himself. He shouldn’t be doing that. No, I have a very good relationship with Anthony.”

An information cited by NBC News mentioned that the White House’s chief of staff Mark Meadows intended to deescalate the issue prior to Navarro’s article, which was reported to be a violation to the protocols of Meadows.

‘Energy and effectiveness’

On an interview, Fauci was confident that he will not be fired despite his complicated relationship with the administration. He told CBS Evening News Anchor Norah O’Donnell that he assesses his career based on his “energy and effectiveness.” The top health expert admits, “With all due modesty, I think I’m pretty effective. I certainly am energetic. And I think everybody thinks I’m doing more than an outstanding job.”
